Understanding Hip Anatomy

Hip Anatomy

The hip joint is the largest weight-bearing joint in the human body. It is also referred to as a ball and socket joint and is surrounded by muscles, ligaments, and tendons. The thigh bone or femur and the pelvis join to form the hip joint.

Common Hip Conditions

Understanding Causes of Hip Pain and Restricted Movement

Many conditions can affect the hip joint and lead to pain, stiffness, and limited movement. When one or more parts of the hip are damaged such as the cartilage, labrum, or surrounding structures the joint may not function smoothly.

Hip pain is most felt in the groin, but it can also radiate down the inside of the leg, into the knee, occasionally down to the ankle, around the buttock or top of the thigh and rarely, into the lower back. Some patients also report a “catching” or “snapping” sensation during movement. This may indicate damage to the labrum (the soft tissue rim of the hip joint) or the articular cartilage.

A history of previous injury or trauma is often present, and limping is a common sign associated with painful hip conditions.
