SMART Robotic Surgeon ™ | Top five tips to avoid sports injury during the Six Nations Rugby
In this 2-minute video, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon Mr. Nadim Aslam shares his top five tips to avoid sports injuries and safely participate in rugby ahead of the Six Nations tournament.
Here is a summary of his recommendations:
- Regular Conditioning and Fitness Training: Focus on building flexibility, strength, and endurance, specifically targeting high-injury muscle groups such as the hamstrings, knees, and ankles.
- Technique and Safe Play: Practice correct techniques for tackling, scrummaging, and rucking. Additionally, use protective gear such as mouthguards and knee supports to minimize risk.
- Adequate Rest and Recovery: Fatigue significantly increases the likelihood of muscle injury. Ensure you incorporate proper warm-up and cool-down routines, and allow muscles time to rest between games.
- Immediate Treatment (R.I.C.E.): If you do sustain a minor injury, immediately apply the R.I.C.E. protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) to reduce swelling and begin recovery right away.
- Specialist Care and Rehabilitation: For more severe or persistent injuries, seek an assessment from an orthopedic consultant for proper diagnosis and imaging. Following a tailored physiotherapy program will help safely rehab you back to fitness and prevent reinjury.
